The Shrine of the Book, the Israel Museum, the Mount of Olives, Gethsemane, the Via Dolorosa, and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher

Today our first stop was the Shrine of the Book, a museum that commemorates the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Shrine of the Book is also home to a model of 1st century Jerusalem.  There are a lot of exciting things about the exhibit, such as a replica of the Isaiah scroll, but we were not allowed to take pictures inside the museum.  However, the website does have a link to an interactive virtual tour.

We also visited the Israel Museum which, among other things, is loaded with fascinating ancient artifacts.

After the museums and lunch, we drove to the Mount of Olives.  It was a beautiful, clear day.  There is an amazing view of the Old City from the top of the Mount of Olives, and it is a short walk to the grove of olive trees that is the traditional site for the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of All Nations.

After some time to ponder in the Church of All Nations, we made our way up to the Pools of Bethesda, the Via Dolorosa and the 14 stations of the cross that lead to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which some Christians believe to be the site where Jesus Christ was crucified.

We capped off the evening with souvenir shopping, dinner, and a visit to a synagogue where a Rabbi who is a direct descendant of Holocaust victims spoke to us about his faith.

Tomorrow, to the South.
